autoadjust colors

What operations does Irfanview perform with the 'Autoadjust colors' function?
What settings are actually being adjusted, and how does Irfanview compute the levels for each new setting?
I'm just curious because I'm trying to match mutiple images according to brightness, color, contrast, etc., and am wondering if the 'Autoadjust colors' function is a good way to do this.

I'm curious too about the computing behind this function.
It's hard to say, because outputs can be quite unpredictable.
Sometimes almost no change, other times a clear change.
