Directory displays in "random" order

This isn't an Irfanview problem but it affects me most when I use Irfanview. In all my Windows applications, if I open a file, I get the list of files in the directory in seemingly random order. I have to switch to detail view and sort by name or date. Next time I go back to that directory, it is displayed in random order again. Anyone know of how to get a directory to remember that I want to display in name order by default, please?

Way late reply, I know, but...

It may be set to display by some other sort... which appears random.
A person might set the sort you want, then go to Tools, Folder Options (or Organize)... and look over View tab options.
