Unable to play mpeg, wmv and avi videos

After having performed a complete reinstall of my PC and installed irfanview 4.25 I am now unable to see videos in the formats mpeg, wmv and avi. The files 'play' and I hear the sound but the screen is black.

My videos settings are: Use internal video/sound player and not other features checked. I have also just installed the complete plugin package.

It seems like a trivial problem which is probably down to some setting, but I haven't been able to figure out which one.

    see:
    - "Unable to play .AVI files"
    - "Black Screen when playing videos, Audio works fine..."
    - "Black screen while playing videos"

    Maybe you need some codecs!

    regards

Like Frank, I too think you may not have re-installed all necessary Codecs... Try KLite, it contains most of the commonly-used Codecs and should get you back online! Please note that the KLite link here starts the download straightaway - the KLite Homepage is here

You are both right - I hadn't installed any extra codices. However, doing so haven't made much of a difference. I can now play videos with the option 'use external player' but I prefer to watch all in Irfanview.

As I understand, irfanview uses other programs to play video, but how many others are nessecary to have installed? I didn't have any codices before - for all I know. Just the media player that comes with Vista.

IrfanView + Plugins + basic variant of the K-Lite Codec Pack

But my suggestion is: Take IrfanView for pictures and VLC media player for videos!

Have you tried dragging-dropping the video file into IrfanView? That should work, if your IrfanView and Plugins versions match and you have KLite installed!

I haven't tried VLC Player, might do so one of these days! I do recommend KMPlayer! (Download Link)
