Just displaying images - newbie question

Hello, I am trying to do something extremely simple, and that is to put some images in a Windows folder and display them one at a time on the screen. I just want to hit a key and be able to go forward and backward, and rotate the images if necessary. That's mainly it. Do I need irfanview to do this, or is there an easy way to do it in Windows? I am just showing travel pictures to my friends. Thanks.

IrfanView can do that, but I recommend Picasa or even the built in Windows picture viewer for basic slideshow options because they are more user friendly.

In irfanview, press W to bring up the slideshow options and press 'add all' to the directory of photos you want to play. Pressing enter will go into full screen mode where the mouse buttons/scroll/arrow keys/spacebar will flick through photos. To rotate press L or R. Press P to open fullscreen options if you want to disable the green text and "resample (slow)" to speed up loading.

      Hi,

Windows have a picture viewer, but you should not use it for rotating a picture because this will do a rotation and save the file, recompression it. Irfan View have a function for rotating jpegs without a recompression, caledl jpeg lossless transformations.

And IrfanView is small, fast and do not really need an installation, just download the zip version and extract it to a directory. You can start IrfanView directly, even if you store it on an USB stick or a memory card of you camera.

      So my recommendation is: IrfanView

      Best regards, Nils.

Egads! Thank you for telling me this. I don't want my pictures to be modified.

On XP, it will warn you that rotating it will save (and recompress) the image. But that is definitely a point to IrfanView because it can also read orientation tags in your photos if your camera supports them so it will rotate image automatically for you.
