can't open MPG files

I run Win7, latest Irfanview + plugins.

If I receive an email in Windows Live Mail 2011 with an MPG file attached, double-clicking it on the email will play the audio in Irfanview, but no video.

If I drag the MPG to the desktop, right-click it and choose "open in Windows Media Player" then it plays fine.

How can I make it play in Irfanview right on/from the email please? In Irfanview, Options, file associations, I do have a check-mark beside MPG/MPE/MPEG.

You need to have a suitable codec installed to play MPG files. I have FFDshow but others are available.
Windows media player has its own codecs.
