Getting Photos to have Fade Effect

I'm trying to fade a photo - not transparency - I'd like to be able to star the fade at a certain point of the photo and then fade into the solid image if that makes sense. what are the steps in doing this? thanks!

so you like something like transparency?
If so IrfanView seems not the best program for this.

What do you excatly like to do?

I would like for one portion of the photo to fade into the solid image

So I think using a picture editor like GIMP is the better option.
AFAIK IV does not have an option for fading out or creating a gradient.
