"Select TWAIN Source" button in "Acquire/Batch scanning"

The "Select TWAIN Source" button in the "Acquire/Batch scanning" window does not seem to work. If I select "Select scan/TWAIN Source" from the "File" menu, then this selection is used for "Acquire/Batch scanning".

I frequently use IrfanView to scan receipts to PDF files - normally one or two pages.

The scanner is an "HP Officejet 6500 E710a-f" (it's a 3-in-1 device), although I had the same difficulty with a previous HP 3-in-1 scanner - (J6410, I think).

I use IrfanView 4.22 on Win7 64-bit Professional, although I used to have the same issue with XP 32-bit Professional, and also with other recent versions of IrfanView.

I always use the HP Twain source, rather than the WIA version, although I don't think this makes any difference.

If I open the "Acquire/Batch scanning" window from the "File" menu, and then use the "Select TWAIN Source" button in this window to select the scanner, then the document never appears in IrfanView, or as a file. This is true for both the "Single image" and the "Multiple images" options.

If I open the "Select scan/TWAIN Source" and select the scanner, then go to the "Acquire/Batch scanning" window and scan, the document appears as expected - either in Irfanview or as file(s).

Is this expected behaviour, or is there something I am doing wrong?

It seems odd to have a button on the "Acquire/Batch scanning" window that does not to work, and it would be easier just to open a single window off the File menu.

I cannot explain why we have the "Select scan/TWAIN Source" as a menu item as well as the "Select TWAIN source" button in the "Acquire/Batch scanning" dialog when they appear to do exactly the same thing, but it all works OK for me whichever method I use.
I do not have both Twain and WIA interface on my scanner but I can select between scanner and several cameras if I have them all attached and choose which of them I want to connect to at any particular time. The default device is always the last one selected by either of the methods.
