I have a long standing issue with the Slideshow. This issue existed in 32bit and continues in the 64 bit version. The slideshow will simply exit after displaying a few (1 -15) photo's. No error messages, nothing. If you restart it may start playing normally or it may crash again. Exhibits this behavior (mostly) after I change the photo's in the play list. This can go on for hours or days and then magically it will start to run normally. In normal operation it run 24x7 displaying pictures to a dedicated monitor in the family room.
Operating system Window 7 Pro, 64 bit. i3 Intel Processor, 8GB memory. Screen 1366 X 768
I have tried over the last year countless trouble shooting. Making sure AV (Symantec) excludes all the Irfan folders and all the photo folders. Disabling Symantec entirely does not solve the issue. When it works AV is at standard settings. No combination of AV settings seems to have any impact. Doing a complete full scan sometimes appears to allow normal operation, but other times no impact. I run Seti in the background and the slide show will work normally with it crunching away. But when I am having issues I can shut it off entirely and it has no impact. I have tried all sorts of clean ups and they have no impact. Defragging has no impact. I can do reboots after making troubleshooting changes and it has no impact. I have tried reducing the number of photo's on the list (it has run normally with as many as 20,000). I have gone through the folders to make sure there are no unplayable files in the folders or on the play list. (Thumbs.db does seem to cause an issue, so they are cleaned out).
Changes in the timing of the slide show have no impact. Random or sequential play no impact on issue. When on manual advance I can get through more before it exits. Seems about the same elapsed time before crash, no matter if manual or auto play. Somewhere in the range of about a minute.
I was thinking out of memory, but task manager shows memory left. No message in any Windows logs.
Sometimes I try some of these things and it will go running normally. But the next time I do the same steps and it has no impact. Nothing has proved to be a repeatable solution. And when I do make additions to the play list it does not always occur. So far it seems to be just the passage of time and\or luck.
So far I have been unable to locate any Irfanview logs that might help. If they exist I could use a pointer to them. Is there a way to turn them on for debugging. Any other troubleshooting tips or guidance for good tools would be welcome.
And if I am really lucky, someone has seen this issue, and could give me the solution. It would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Herb Smith.
