    Reported Crash When Cropping Images

I confirm that 4.27 crashes when sizing images. I use XP pro SP3 and process .jpg files. The same thing happens intermittently and not necessarily reproducible.

Unfortunately, without a better bug description and a clear recipe to reproduce the problem, there is nothing anyone can do to confirm the problem.

      Crash when sizing images

      Hi Bhikkhu

Attached is one of the 1000's of images I work on. I crop the text from around the images and that's when IV crashes. Here are the entries from the Application event viewer regarding the crash:

      #1 Application error code 1000:
Faulting application i_view32.exe, version 4.2.7.0, faulting module i_view32.exe, version 4.2.7.0, fault address 0x0001694d.

#2 Dr. Watson error code 4097:
The application, C:\Program Files\IrfanView\i_view32.exe, generated an application error The error occurred on 07/26/2010 @ 09:13:57.212 The exception generated was c0000005 at address 0041694D (i_view32)

If you need additional info please instruct as to which to provide. (There is 2GB of RAM installed)

      Thanks.

No crash here. I drag a selection around the image, and press Ctrl Y to crop it.

What are you doing to get a crash?

I enlarge the images before cropping them, and that's when the crash occurs. As I wrote first, the crash is intermittent and not reproducible. The uploaded image crashed on me this morning just after reading your post, but the crash is not restricted to this image. However, i noticed something in the Event viewer that the crash occurs immediately after an unrelated event error. I will monitor the Event viewer closely and will report back here on the occurrence when it happens again. This may help others as well.

            Crash When Cropping Images

            Hi Bhikkhu, and everyone interested,

Previously, I assumed that an improperly uninstalled Google Updater service (I have no Google software on the computer), was the cause of the crash because IV always crashed immediately after the service tried to update non-existent services (noted in the Applications Event Viewer). Unfortunately, this is not the case. After removing and rebooting, IV 4.27 crashed again and here are the screens I managed to capture.

Please don't misunderstand this post. I LOVE IV like all users here. I can live with the crashes, I don't loose data, and this post is to help the developers help other users whose work is more important than mine. Furthermore, I gladly supply any data that would help, if you guide me as to what you need to know. Please see the attachments and I hope it helps.

It might help if you described exact steps that lead to the crash, plus any other relevant information such as your system platform and IrfanView's configuration ini. Does the crash occur on a clean install?

Thanks for the post Orbik, and sorry for the belated reply. The crash occurred when I created a crop frame around the image and clicked on the top border to adjust. The problem was very similar to Thread: v4.27 (and some previous) Crashing Bug - reported by sheetmusic. I also wondered if it's a clean install and I wasn't sure. So, uninstalled IV and wiped out any reference to the software in the registry. Now, re-installed it with the latest plugins - all v4.27. I have another batch of 130 images to crop and prepare for upload to Wiikimedia and will post here the results.

Unfortunately I cannot reproduce the problem you report ineuw so am unable to do any investigating myself. I can reproduce the one that sheetmusic reported though and, like you, suspect that they may be related.

For the problem that sheetmusic reports there are very clear conditions in which the crash does not occur, in my investigations

                  1. It never occurs in Irfanview v4.25
                  2. It never occurs if the Irfanpaint window is open (Irfanpaint renders the bitmap slightly differently to the main Irfanview program)
                  3. It never occurs if the double headed arrow is positioned, before dragging, with more of the arrow inside the selection than outside it (see my attachments to my last posting in that thread).

It would be interesting to know if any of these are true in your case.
