    jpg 246bpp conversion

    the original jpg image and info is on the right,
    the image and info on left is after color reduction to 256bpp and saved as on disk
    Note the current colors info shows 16M which is wrong but the file size is smaller which looks correct.
    we used the irfan GUI 32 bit and 64 bit versions with same result

    Color JPEG does not support 256 colors, it always uses 24 bit color depth. Only grayscale JPEG supports 8 bit depth.
    My system: IrfanView 4.62 64bit, Windows 10 22H2, Intel Core i5-3570, 16GB RAM, NVidia GTX 1050Ti 4GB

      The image on the left seems to be the original. It has more colours and a larger file size. Subsampling is off for the original, but on for the one on the right, which would reduce the file size further. JPG files usually have 16.7 million colours, unless they are greyscale. 256 bits per pixel = 16.7 million colours.
