ArchiCad, MicroStation, 3DS and Revit woes

    Requested ArchiCad, MicroStation, 3DS and Revit woes

    Has some kind soul out there got a plug-in for viewing .rvt .pln and/or .dgn files?
    Unfortunately some sections of my company are now using ArchiCad and Revit, and to compound the misery 3 of our major clients are submitting drawings in MicoStation.
    Needless to say, the only way to view these drawings is to install the full programs and there seems to be no suitable stand-alone viewer at the moment.

    I've never even heard of these file types.

    IrfanView is a bitmap viewer — even WMF files are viewed as Bitmaps and EPS files are only viewable if they have an embedded preview.

    You need a viewer that can view vector images. The only route I can see to avoid installing the programs is to ensure that all files are output and submitted as PDF files.

      From what I can determine, all the file types that you've mentioned are CAD (Computer Aided Design) files. CAD files are not so much images as they are "instructions of how a drawing is created." In other words, formulas.

      That is, an image of a circle might be a collection of dots, but the instruction of drawing a circle can be a simple formula (a circle of x radius, and y thickness). A CAD instruction file can be very compact, since it is not the size of the drawing but the complexity of the lines assembled to make the drawing that is in the details of the file.

      A plug-in for any image viewer (like IrfanViewer) to view such CAD files, is going to be a special program that can re-interpret the formulas to re-assemble the drawing. Not your everyday sort of program.

      It might be easier to read through the user forums of those sort of programs to see if anyone, even the CAD software company, who might have made a sort of reader (and viewer) of their CAD files. Good luck.

        Thanx guys. It was desperate shot in the dark.The problem with these new CAD formats is that some of the extensions are used by other programs, as all of you who try IMG files ion IrfanView know only too well.
        So I go to the CAD forums with my tail between my legs, knowing that they'll tell me to install the demo versions of the programs, thus taking valuable disk space from my computer.
        I'll let you know if I can find something useful.
