    Requested Letter box screen

    I love Irfanview ... BUT ... it seems that the programmer has forgotten that, although many LCD monitors are "Letter-box slot" type screens, there's many who use 1280x1024 - THUS : I would like to have the OPTION to resize to 1280 by 1024 in the pull down size menu - PLEASE!

    Agreed, I am also using 1280x1024, and several other common screen sizes are missing, e.g. 1024 x 768. The last one on the list, 1280 x 720, should be first on the current list.

    I found these stats for commonly used display sizes:

    1024x768 = 20%
    1280x1024 = 18.2%
    1280x800 = 17.3%
    1449x900 = 10.5%
    1680x1050 = 10%
    1920x1200 = 4.6%
    1366x768 = 3.6%
    1920x1080 = 2.3%
    1152x864 = 2.1%
    1600x1200 = 1.4%
    1280x768 = 1.2%

      It is actually the Screen Resolution used that is more important than Monitor Sizes - I know a lot of people who do not use the optimal screen resolution on their monitor as that is too small for them to read! Not surprisingly, usually, these are older people and ones who aren't very good at getting the best from their Computers. However, it is such people that far outnumber computer geeks and therefore, it would be a good idea to include more screen resolutions for IrfanView!

      I have a page here on Common Screen Resolutions, including updated screen resolution usage statistics, and one here on Display Technologies.

        Most of my images are 4:3 aspect ratio. Even though my monitor is 5:4 ratio I never want to resize them to that because they are then permanently distorted.
        So including 5:4 ratios in the resize drop down list does not seem very useful.

          I agree that that this list could use some more options.
          My monitor is set at 1600x900, but I don't want all my images distorted to an aspect ratio of 16:9..

            There is really no need to have a lot of monitor screen sizes in the list IMHO. If you really want to make your image the same size (and shape) as the screen you can just select Desktop size (no aspect ratio).
            I find those last 2 radio button options quite confusing. In the one cited above "Desktop" means full screen, whereas in Best fit to desktop, there "Desktop" appears to mean the area inside a maximized window.

            Even more confusing to some I imagine is the fact that if you have checked Preserve aspect ratio then only the width of the "standard" dimensions comes out to what it says. The height is whatever the ratio dictates.

              You're quite right about this confusion. So maybe the whole dialog needs some reconsiderations.
