.img files from the U.S. Geological Survey

The U.S. Geological Survey releases digital elevation images in a peculiar .img format that cannot be opened by IRFAN. From what I'm able to gather its a fairly standard format within the community of geographic studies -- its sometimes called an ERDAS .img file. There many .img conversion programs out there but all of them are very clunky and hard to use... I've had no success getting one to convert the image to ordinary .tif.

Could IRFAN add a plugin for this format?
