When I work with images, I often use 48 bits per channel or higher stored in TIFF format or FITS format files. Can IrfanView be provided with features to preserve the bit depth based on the source image or also edit abilities which will allow the bits per color channel be increased or decreased for file formats that allow greater bit depth options ?

I don't see this happening any time soon. Look for another image viewer.
IrfanView doesn't even support 32-bit transparency properly yet.Before you post … Edit your profile • IrfanView 4.72 • Windows 10 Home 19045.2486

Can Irfanview support FITS format?
Hi, I'm newly registered but have been a user and Fan of Irfanview for maybe 10 years now, obviously I really like this software and have contributed in the past through donations, not often enough for sure but I barely get by these days.
I have used it non professionally for general uses but also use it in my astrophotography (imaging the heavens) hobby.
Anyway like the title says, can Irfanview support the FITS format ?
If no, as I fear, I'd really like to see that functionality added in a future rollout.
My "new to me" astronomy camera downloads in this format and while I think I may be able to convert them to tiff format using some other piece of software I'd really rather Irfanview treated the fits format as any of the other formats Irfanview lists as its standards.
I noticed that I can open a fits thumbnail image when I click on one contained in a folder of many fits images, but the function of the arrows in the top banner for navigation between the fits images in the folder does not work. I'd assume many of Irfanview's tools will also not work with this image
format, but I am hopeful that will change at some near future date.
Keep up the good work.

I found this old feature request with a search and merged yours with it. A little research about the FITS file format found this page with a link to Mac software for working with those files.
You are welcome to forward a request to Irfan Skiljan (see Help, About IrfanView in the program for his email). If you do, please let me know the result and I will update this thread. Before you post … Edit your profile • IrfanView 4.72 • Windows 10 Home 19045.2486
