Information about using Irfanview to send a fax

I have a Windows Vista 64 bit computer. I also have a Canon Lide 700f scanner.
I do not possess a fax machine.
However I read somewhere about the possibility of sending a fax direct from ones computer.
Please can anyone advise if this is possible, and if so how I would do this.
I do use the program Irfanview, and have done so for many years.
I use it for scanning and for viewing images and for editing images.
