Wrong icon for image files in Windows Explorer

    I'm using IrfanView 64bit v 4.41 with Windows 7 OS.

Until recently the icon associated with image files in Windows Explorer was the IrfanView red cat but with these files all assigned to open with IrfanView 64 bit the icon for jpg, gif, tif and some others has changed to a yellow and black icon which looks a bit like a folder with some minute text across it. It this an IrfanView problem? I have followed several internet advice streams to reset my icon cache but it hasn't solved this.

If I change the default programme to IrfanView 32 bit then the icons change back to the red cat, so I think this is something to do with the 64 bit version.

    Grateful for advice.

Choose all of the file types that you want to associate with IrfanView (64-bit) in Tools, settings, Extensions.

Thanks for your reply, but if you look at the attached image, which is from Control Panel Default Programs, you will see that IrfanView 64-bit is already selected as the default program, but it still shows the wrong icon.

I have tried using the Tools Extensions in IrfanView but still get the wrong icon.

Isn't this the same problem that was discussed at some length in an earlier thread?
I understood that it had been fixed in Irfanview v4.41 .

It certainly seems to be a related issue. The strange thing is that my current icon for raster images (see uploaded image above) isn't included in the executable for IrfanView 64 bit, so I'm puzzled where Windows is finding this. If the issue was fixed before it must have become un-fixed again.

To update this thread - I solved the problem with a Registry Edit.

For a jpg file I expanded the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\IrfanView.jpg and in the DefaultIcon I found the string %SystemRoot%\SysWow64\shell32.dll,19 which must refer to an icon in the shell32.dll file. When I replaced this with C:\Program Files (x86)\IrfanView\i_view32.exe,0 it displayed the file type with the correct red cat icon. (You have to log off and log in again for this to take effect).

I did the same for .bmp, .tif, .gif and any of the other extensions which were displaying incorrectly, using the keys HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\IrfanView.bmp, HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\IrfanView.tif etc.

For some reason the registry became altered (when I installed 64 bit IrfanView?) and thereafter IrfanView didn't seem to have the permission to change the icon back, however many times I tried using the Extensions property within the programme. That still seems to be the case with version 4.41.
