    Cropping with Aspect Ratio

    Greetings,

We do a good bit of decal type work. We apply customer supplied graphics to cabinet body panels.

The panels are known sizes and we need to crop the images to the panel's aspect ratio so as to not distort the image.

    ie

The panel is 76" wide by 28" high
    The image is 3000 x 1500

Is there a cropping tool or a way to control Irfanview's crop that will only allow the crop window to only be in the aspect ratio ?
And allow dynamic sizing and location ?

Right now we are really just estimating with the crop tool. Resizing doesn't do the trick very well

    TIA -David

Hold down the Ctrl Key while resizing the selection to maintain the aspect ratio. You can also save and use custom selections (Shift C, add to standard box).

Yes you can do that. Make sure you have the latest version of Irfanview (v4.42). It is a fairly new feature you will be using.

From the menu select Edit > Create custom crop selection (or press Shift+C).
In the dialog box select Custom ratio. You will need to calculate the ratio you need - in your example it would be 76 divided by 28, which is 2.714. Type that into the adjacent box (see attached image). If you want you can type the required width or height of the selection you intend to use into the boxes on the right and it will then show you what the other dimension will be, but that is only for your information - it is not necessary to do so. When finished click on Save values and Exit and the dialog box will close.

When you want to draw your selection box hold down the Ctrl key and drag the mouse in the usual way while holding down the left mouse key. Any selection box you draw while holding down the Ctrl key will have the aspect ratio 2.714.
