    Paste without resizing

    Hello all.

I'm a complete newbie when it comes to image editing - the most I used is Paint (!) - so my question might appear noobish.

Anyways, if I want to copy a portion of my image into another area of the same image, how can I do it without resizing the selected area?

AFAIK, one has to 1. select an area of, say, 100x70 px, ctrl+c, select another area designed for pasting the clipboard, cltr+v. Except for that if I want the same proportions, I have to select exactly an area of 100x70 px in the area where I want to paste the selection.

Do I miss a simple route here or an I just complicating things? All I want to do is copy&paste a portion of an image into the same image.

    Thanks in advance.

It is much easier than that.
    • Select the area
    • Control C to copy it to the clipboard
    • Right-click inside the selection to get the four-pointed arrow cursor
    • Drag the selection to another area
    • Control V to paste the clipboard contents into the selection

Or, you can press F12 to bring up the IrfanPaint Toolbar, select the clone brush, set the brush diameter, right-click on the area you want to clone, left click on the area you want to copy to, and start painting.

      Very helpful indeed. Thanks

EDIT - Sorry to bother again, but what if I want to do the same thing from an image to another? I understand there is the clone brush, but it only select circles, not rectangles.

Quite easy now with version 4.20.
After the first 2 steps and with the selection box still displayed press Shift+C to open the Custom selection dialog. It will show the size and position of the rectangle you selected. Press "Save current values", which stores the data in the IV initialization file, and "Apply to image" to close the dialog.
Then open your second image. You lose the selection from the screen but can bring it back by pressing Shift+C and "Apply to image" again.
Then right click and drag and press Ctrl+V as before.

If you want to go a bit further with copy and pasting of rectangular areas you might also like to experiment using a second copy of IrfanView.
First make sure in Options>Properties>Misc1 that you have unchecked "Only one instance of IrfanView is active", then minimize the window and open IrfanView again. You can select the copy in use by clicking its icon on the Windows taskbar if visible (or using Alt+Tab if not). You can still copy to the clipboard and store selection box positions from a picture in one copy of IrfanView and, because the clipboard and initialization file are shared, you can paste both area and image on to a picture in the second copy just like before. The advantage is that you still have the first copy open to paste more bits of that or from another picture. Great for making collages on a blank canvas too.
Give it a try and have fun.

Driving me insane, paste the clipboard into a different canvas

I still have Lview Pro 1b around because I cannot for the life of me figure out how to copy a selection I've placed in the clipboard into a different image without trying to precisely place my selection in aspect and location before pressing "paste."

In Lview Pro 1b, copy, paste, the selection remains highlighted, I then drag it wherever I want it, drop, click somewhere else, done.

I've now spent close to 30' combing options, reading the forum, pressing buttons, and damned if I can figure this out.

Can someone please explain how to paste the contents of the clipboard into an image and without all the sizing and precision. I know it shouldn't be this difficult.

Thanks so much for preserving my sanity.

          Steve

IrfanView does not support layers, that is why it is difficult.

            Here is the easy method:
            1. In the smaller image that you wish to copy: Select All (Ctrl A)
            2. Create custom selection (Shift C), Save current values, OK
            3. Copy the selection (the whole image)
            4. Switch to the target image
            5. Create custom selection (Shift C), enter some X,Y offsets if you wish
            6. Shift + Cursor keys to move the selection to where you want it.
            7. Paste (Control V) to paste the small image into the selection

I guess I will continue to have Lview on my system until I'm dead. The inability to drag and drop was a huge step backwards. Lview 1b was from my Win 3.1 system. Its now 2009 and my favorite software for pictures still can't drag and drop? Seems odd I'm the only guy trying to do this.

Thanks for the attempt at help,

              Steve

If you want to copy from one image to another you can use Create panorama image to put both together side by side as one picture. Use Bhikkhu Pesala's original method in post #2 to copy, drag selection and paste from one image to the other, then just Crop to remove the unwanted second image.
