transparent watermark?

How can I create a transparent watermark with your software?
I realize that it will need some opacity to be visible, however I do not want
to completely block out the part of the image it is in.

You can save an image as PNG or GIF with a transparent background, but IrfanView doesn't support Alpha transparency. You will have to lay your watermark on a background layer for the document to be visible.
