eps files open without ghostscript?

I have irfanview and compatible plugin pack installed. (i do not have ghostscript installed. Howcome then i can preview and open eps files?? I thought ghostscript (AFPL) was an essential requirement?

is it because the eps files have built in preview support and that eps filles sans this support require ghostscript??

Yes. That's about right. IV will show a preview image in EPS files even without the plugin.
