Does IrfanView have provision for rating and sorting images (like 1 to 5 stars)?

    [warning comment="newbie"]

So far, I'm impressed with IrfanView. Thanks!

Does the s/w have provision for having some kind of "rating" associated with each image in a directory?

That would facilitate going through the images, deleting the ones that are poor (out of focus, motion blur, eyes closed, dull picture, etc.), and then assigning something like one-star through 5-stars to the "keepers". I'd also appreciate having the ability to sort by the number of "stars".

No. It is just a viewer, no a catalogue program.

Thanks (again) for the quick reply.

I was curious if IrfanView was open source? Do you happen to know what software language it is written in, and what tools? (such as C or C++ using Visual Studio, or Delphi using Borland?).

It seems very fast, so I'm guessing it is implemented with a compiled language.

No, its not Open Source. My guess is it is written in C++

        From IrfanView's Languages page:
        :For Translators

If you want to translate IrfanView to another languages, download the language SDK:
        Server 1, Server 2

Please check "README.TXT" file. You need "Microsoft Visual C++" or a tool like "Resource Hacker" for translation.

I believe XnView will do ratings.

If you want to do it in IrfanView though, it will require some effort. You could sort your files by creating some folders named 1-5 and utilize the Move file (F7) or Copy file (F8) function to do the ratings. Afterwards, you could use batch rename to apply prefixes, allowing you to bring them back together in one folder. Or you could save the files as txt lists, allowing you to retain the original names, but achieve the same effect. The txt lists can be easily loaded into IrfanView and use up little space. Each list would be a rating.

You could also just use Rename (F2) and add a prefix to your filenames. There is IPTC and Comment areas to edit. I've also presented some ideas about filtering and links in this thread as well. I'm sure there are other ways to do it.

It is written in C++, compiled with Microsoft Visual C++ 6.
