    Effects Not Working

Hi! I’m really new to all this stuff, and for some reason many of my effects on Irfan don’t seem to be working. Most of the color effects work as well as emboss, etc…but effects such as sharpen, blur, oil paint don’t seem to change my photo at all. Thanks so much!

Have you tried adjusting the sliders?

yes I have. The thing is, the effects will show up on the preview screen, but when I press 'ok' nothing happens to my picture.

Is Windows Vista blocking access to the i_view32.ini configuration file?

Many problems result from not installing IrfanView correctly for Vista. Search the forum and you will find many related problems.

I am using XP Home, so I don't see this problem. Vista doesn't allow files in C:\Program Files\ to be modified.

Is there any way I could see if Windows Vista was blocking access to the i_view32.ini configuration file?

I went through previous posts about Vista issues, but all the technical talk was quite difficult to follow.

          Sorry and thanks again!

Very easy to see if settings are being saved in the i_view32.ini file. If the screen is maximized click on the double square icon to get a resizable window and drag the edges of the window to change the size. Close Irfanview and then open it again. If the window is still as you left it then the settings were stored.

I suspect though that your problem is nothing to do with that. Nearly all the effects have settings. Open an image and then go to the settings from the Image menu >Effects >Effects Browser. The default settings for some of them (Blur in particular) are so low that the effect is barely visible until you increase it.

              effects problem

I also have a problem with the effects not working (same as above). I am using both Vista and XP. Irfanview version 4.25. I do have it installed in G:/irfanview as opposed to the default directory on the XP system and the default directory on the Vista system. The same problem occurs on both systems.

Do you have the Effects plug-in installed (Effects.dll)? Check that you have a copy in a Plugins sub-folder of G:/irfanview. It will not find the plug-in anywhere else.

If so, do any of the Effects work?

Try using the Effects browser (Image menu >Effects >Effects Browser....) and apply the effects from there using the slider to control how much to apply. Do you see the effect in the Preview window?
