    can't open JP2 file

I can't seem to get my Irfanview program to open a JP2 or JPEG2000 file: whenever I try, I get this message: Decode error!
I know the file is valid, since I can open it with IE7 equipped with expressview from lizardtech. I've downloaded & installed the latest full version of plug-ins & now I'm out of ideas...any help would be appreciated

I have no problem opening JP2 files, but you need a license to save them from IrfanView if they're larger than 640x480 pixels.

If working with JP2 images is imporant to you, it is better to use FastStone Viewer.. If you do just want to view JP2 files in IrfanView post a link to a file or attach one for testing.

The latest plugins for JP2 can be found on the IrfanView plugin page, but you say you have them already. (Note that its a separate download)

Could you please upload/link this image? I'm working on a new JPEG2000 plugin, and I'm currently testing it with the strangest JPEG2000 images I can find; if this image can't be read by the current JPEG2000 plugin it must be quite exotic, and it would be precious for me.

          here's the file

This file is an aerial photograph of an entire county (Russell) in Kansas at a 1-meter resolution - it's a big sucker (800M), but seems to me like Irfanview ought to work for opening & working with it:
          first go here: http://www.kansasgis.org/catalog/catalog.cfm
then click on 'Imagery and Raster'
then click on 'FSA National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) 2008'
then, under Download Files, click on 'Browse available files'
then save file 'RS_08NAIP.zip' and extract file 'RS_08NAIP.jp2' therefrom.
That's it - that's the JP2 file I get the Decode error! from when I try to open it...
          Thanks for your help

The zip file "RS_08NAIP.zip" is 788MB big!
            Is that normal?

Are you sure that the download completed OK?

It is a huge file. Another possibility is that your PC doesn't have enough memory to open it. I very much doubt if mine does.

Try opening it in another program like FastStone Viewer.

With my plugin it couldn't be opened, and I think even with the LuraWave plugin. If compressed it's ~800 MB, I think it'll be at least three times big uncompressed; this means that it would take at least 2.4 GB of memory for the target DIB, more than the address space available to the IV process. Even if it were smaller, the decoders usually decode all the image in an intermediate format, translating it to a DIB, so it would be necessary to have enough free address space for at least twice the size of the uncompressed image.
I suggest you to use some third party JPEG2000-specialized reading application that loads at the same time only the tiles you're viewing (or decodes the file one tile at time). Still, I don't know if such program can be obtained for free.

I tried the OpenJPEG viewer and a few other things that can handle JP2. No dice. Opens okay with a hex editor.

the file actually unzips to be 807,549 KB...I know it's a valid file because IE7 equipped with the expressview plug-in from Lizardtech opens it just fine & does limited manipulation quickly & efficiently...for the same reason, I don't think memory is an issue...thanks for your consideration

If you want to make some tests, here it is. Note that this is really immature, it can't save, it's slower than the current JPEG2000 plugin and with one of the images in my test suite it crashes, but, nonetheless, generally it works fine. It also has a better support for "strange" JPEG2000 settings and color spaces than the LuraWave plugin.
