How do I Change default setting??

When I download something, Irfanview automatically opens it. How can I change this so that I can decide what program I want to use?
    Thank you

I think that will depend on the settings in your browser, but the file associations for IrfanView can be changed in Tools, Properties, Extensions. Select the file types that you wish to open in IrfanView when you open them by double-clicking on the file name in Windows Explorer.

With a question like this, it would have been handy to name the browser being used.
Bhikkho is right. File associations are set in a browser, with the appropriate action.
So showing it directly in streaming mode by the assigned application, like audio files, or save it to disk, before opening the file with the proper program later.
If you don't know how to change these browser settings, you can always avoid this by a R-click on the link to the file, then choose 'save link as' (or words as such).

The browser is IE 8 although I also use FireFox. All downloads are going through IE7 Pro which opens a download window from which I have to click to open . There is no choice given me there as to what to open with

braxx20, its not a good idea to run one Browser version, downloading through another, earlier version! I suggest you use IE 8 alone, if you want to use IE.

I am on Win XPP SP3, running IrfanView 4.25. To reproduce the problem, I downloaded an Excel file using IE8. Got to the screen asking me if I wanted to open the file or save it. When I chose to open it, it opened alright with Excel, without IrfanView kidnapping the file!

Does this happen when you download using Firefox too? I did not check over Firefox - have been using Firefox for donkey's years now and never had the problem you mention...!

IE7 Pro is an add-on compatible with IE6,7,and 8 which enhances their operation. It is NOT a browser. Perhaps you would like to Google it to see what it is. When you download something IEPro opens a window and shows the download progress, etc. and then when done you click on it to open - no choice on that screen. I will try
firefox and see what happens. I really like IV but wish there was some way to NOT make it the default.

Well then, it appears that IE7 Pro does not give you the option to open with a different program!

Not even a hidden settings dialog that one can get to with seven clicks? That's not nice. I've never tried it, since I almost never use IE anyway except for testing things. Firefox is a good choice. It gives accessible and changeable download options.

Well, what would happen if I uninstall IV? Can I do it temporarily in a simple way?

You could give that a shot. Your Windows should then revert to Internet Explorer.

I suggest you use a clean uninstaller like Revo: try the freeware version, it hunts out Windows Registry entries as well as files across your Hard Disk that are left over when you do a normal uninstall, so that you may delete them.

If you don't like the results, you could always re-install IE7 Pro.
