How do display like old versions?

I'm sure this has been asked before but I didn't know how to search for it. Sorry.

I don't care for a few behaviors the newest version has and want to downgrade, but can't remember which version I need and how to get it, plus I may be just using this wrong.

    I'm using version 4.25.

In a past version I could set options to make it behave like the following, but I can't know:

IrfanView would open in the position and size I last used.

It would shrink the pic to fit the window upon opening IF the pic was too large, otherwise it left it small. So, if it was larger than the window size, it shrank it to fit, but if it was smaller than the window size, it left it smaller than the window.

Also, it would NOT resize the window when I'd zoom in or out.

Also, it would zoom in on whatever part was centered. Now it changes to the center of the pic when zooming

Do I need a specific version or will this one do it with settings. I already know about display settings, but they won't do the above.

    Thanks,
    Eljay

I think you're wrong. Nothing much has changed there since previous versions apart from resampling options.

Don't fit anything in display settings. Properties, Viewing, Remember last used window size.

The display functionality has changed. Menu? I don't know. This has happed a few times now where I got a new computer and had to start over with the latest version of IrfanView and went through this frustration. Last it happened I found the answer on Yahoo Answers where another person asked the same thing and someone explained it couldn't be done in the newer versions and gave a link to an older version, which worked great. It functioned just as I described. Unfortunately, I didn't save a copy of it. So, I guess the question is, knowing an older version is the answer, where can I get an older version?

IrfanView behaves exactly as it always has for me. I carry over my settings from one version to the next, even when I change computers and operating systems. It saves playing around with the settings anew each time. Because yes, the menus do change, and perhaps the default settings. But it will still do what you want.

AWSOME! Thanks for the help. I'll downgrade one at a time until I find the version I'm talking about. It behaved differently with zooming and window resizing, and it's been discussed before where I've read about it along with experiencing it myself Others may not be aware of these differences because they may not use it the way I do, and that's understandable.

The way that it behaves depends on the way that you configure it in options.

Yes. As above. Do not fit anything.

It still remains centred when zooming, with the above display settings.

I don't see that as working. It leaves oversized pictures not fitting in the window upon open. I want to shrink the opening pic to fit the window size IF and only if the pic is too large for the window, AND do NOT zoom if the original pic size fits.

Here it is all together... Make IrfanView open an oversized picture zoomed to fit the window, but NOT enlarge a picture that already fits the window (leave THAT picture original sized), and do NOT change the size of the window itself, and do not change zoom factor when I manually change the size of the window, and do NOT change the size of the window when I zoom in and out.

What are the settings to make this version do that? I had a previous version doing all this for years. If this version can do this, I won't have to research which older version did it. Thanks.

Is "Fit only big images to window" what you want? Nothing has changed here since the previous versions. See the attached scrreen shot from version 3.97.

The only thing that has changed in the most recent version is the resample options, and the centre in window option. Nothing has been taken away.

I agree with you to some extent, eljay. - I have been using "Only fit big images to window" ever since I started using IrfanView.

I always retain older versions installed.

When using IV 3.98 under this settings , I find that
                    - zooming a picture will not resize the window, even when the image begins to outgrow the window size
                    - resizing the window will not change the zoom factor.

Doing the same in IV 4.25, I find that
                    - zooming a picture will not resize the window, same as in previous versions
                    - resizing the window will change the zoom factor!

(I didn't try intermediate IV versions for this test)

                    So, the functionality has changed.

I liked the old one better too. IMHO the various "fit image" settings and "resize window" settings should be separated.

                    currently running 4.56 / 32 bit
