Difficulty in transferring a scanned image to IrfanView 4.25

Can anyone who has a Canon PIXMA MP240 Printer/Scanner advise me how to transfer a scanned and saved image to IrfanView for resizing etc., Despite many attempts, when I click Irfanview/File/Open I get the following message:-
"Can't read file format. Unknown file format or file not found."

The usual procedure is to Acquire images from IrfanView directly using the scanner without actually saving the file. Are you using the software that came with the scanner to save the file? What file format are you saving it in?
