can't change name pattern

I am attempting to do a batch conversion/rename but I cannot change the name pattern. I must be doing it wrong, eh?

I was trying:

Tab: "file"
Select: "batch conversion/rename"

Then in the selection box "Batch Rename Settings" I type in the pattern I want... then it changes it back to the former pattern. Grrr.

I have also selected "Options" and changed the pattern there, too... same result.

Do I need to ensure something somewhere is "unlocked" in order to change the name pattern?????
