When I scan a photo to my documents folder it arrives in a very large format, so I want to reduce it to, say, 800 by 600, but when I do that via Resize/Resample in the dropdown list from "Image", I get a picture that is "squashed" that is, the horizontal length exceeds the vertical. This does not seem to have been a problem in the past, and I'm trying to figure out what I changed to cause this effect. I have tried resizing via pixels, cm and in, and by entering specific dimensions, but same result, and the "resize" screen seems to always return to the original WRONG dimensions. Any help appreciated.

If the original image is the same aspect ratio, say 1600 x 1200 pixels, there is no problem. If not, you will need to crop it first using Custom Crop (Shift C), and choosing the 4:3 aspect ratio. Ctrl drag to resize the selection, and right-click to reposition it. Then Ctrl Y to crop. After that you can resize it to 800x600 without squashing it.Before you post … Edit your profile • IrfanView 4.72 • Windows 10 Home 19045.2486
