How to convert gif to ico file - not working

I selected a gif file and when it went to "save as" as I did in the past on my old computer that area was greyed out. Would someone please tell me to to do this. Also, do I need to download plug in files in order to convert files. thanks, Monika

Animated GIF images cannot be saved as Icons — static GIF images can.
