Only one instance of irfanview is active

Isn't this supposed to keep multiple instances from running at the same time?
Once in a while, I accidentally click 'open all files' in Agent, a newsgroup client. It then starts HUNDREDS of instances of irfanview, with no way to stop it.
I'm using the most current version of irfanview, but all versions have done this.

Opening multiple files from Windows Explorer with this setting enabled I get variable results. What I suspect is that it depends on how fast the files are loaded. If I try to open five large image files, they each open and close in turn, leaving only one open finally.

However, if I open a folder full of 62 icons, I end up with seven IrfanView instances open.

To close all instances, just press and hold the Escape key.
