    Batch rename - permission problem

Background: I loaded some 2000 pictures & videos off my iPhone onto my PC. I wish to use the batch rename to move them into folders based on the dates they were taken. I'm using the name pattern of "$T(%Y_%m_%d)\$F" and have run some test batches.

For each photo, [in this example for photo AEAS9455.jpg], Irfanview comes back with the command to copy it to: "C:\folders,etc.\2020_10_18\AEAS9455.JPG" and an error message: "Can't rename file! (maybe the filename already exists or a permission problem)"

The filename didn't exist - I want Irfanview to create it when it moves the photo into it (if it is not there already).

My question is: How do I fix this? Is it an Irfanview issue, or an issue with my Windows 10 PC? Any ideas? If I can't get this to work, it means many, many hours doing it manually. I hope someone has crossed this path already, Thanks for your time.

Take a look at this previous thread.

I've read through most of that thread (not to the end). I'm not questioning getting the photos into a folder on my Windows PC. I've got no problem getting them here, and no problem putting them all in one folder.

But now I want to take that folder of 2000 pictures and put it into subfolders by date. My Irfan batch process creates the correct command (the copy to: "C:\folders,etc.\2020_10_18\AEAS9455.JPG" command), but my PC doesn't like the batch process creating the new folder "2020_10_18". It only works if I have created the folder "2020_10_18" already before hand. But I have two years of photos, with photos on most days. That means I have to create 730 subfolders (one for each day) before the Batch process works. I want Irfanview to create the subfolder when it needs to.

PS, I've read a bit more of that thread. Those users were looking at photos on their iPhone. As I am trying to make space on my phone, I have moved a copy of those photos to my PC, so I am not doing the same thing (looking at photos on the phone). I am looking at photos moved to my PC, and I don't have those issues.

Thanks for reading my question, btw.

PS, Nothing to do with the question at hand.

I read that I am supposed to put my computer system and Irfanview Version number in my trailing note. I've looked for the place to add it but can't find it - Usually, I don't have troubles finding such things. Where can I add the note at the end of my posts (whatever you call it)?

If I select the advanced batch option to create subfolders it works for me, but it is not so useful. It includes the entire path:

          C:\TEMP\IrfanView 4.57 32-bit\Users\pesal\Pictures\JPEG

As a moderator I can see that you're still using 4.51 according to your forum profile.
The forum code was updated recently, so as far as I can tell the only way to include your system details is by pasting a text note.

I will start experimenting with the advanced batch option - I'm always loathe to experiment when it says be careful, but I'm already working in folder that is a copy of a copy so I'll see if I can make it work.

btw, my version is actually 4.54, but the forum profile input page didn't allow me to put anything higher than 4.51. I will upgrade before above experimenting.
