I tried opening up various Quake II .wal textures in Irfanview 4.58 with the 4.59.10 formats.dll on Windows 7 Ult 64 and it is having none of it. On the right is Wally to show that the file is not corrupt or anything. Am I missing a setting or option somewhere at all? Otherwise any idea why it refuses to open?

They all open OK here. Edit: But not in the 64-bit version.

My mistake, the 64-bit does not open the *.wal files. I had saved it as JPG.
Advantages of IrfanView 32-bit over 64-bit version:- Runs on a 32-bit and 64-bit Windows
- Loads all files/images for normal needs (max. RAM size is about 1.3 GB)
- Needs less disc space
- All PlugIns will work: not all PlugIns are ported (yet) to 64-bit (like OCR) and some 32-bit PlugIns must be still used in the 64-bit version, some with limitations (see the "Plugins32" folder)
- Some old 32-bit PlugIns (like RIOT and Adobe 8BF PlugIn) work only in compatilibilty mode in IrfanView-64 (only 32-bit 8BF files/effects can be used)
- Command line options for scanning (/scan etc.) work only in 32-bit (because no 64-bit TWAIN drivers)
Notes:- You can install both versions on the same system, just use different folders. For example: install the 32-bit version in your "Program Files (x86)" folder and the 64-bit version in your "Program Files" folder (install 32-bit PlugIns to IrfanView-32 and 64-bit PlugIns to IrfanView-64, DO NOT mix the PlugIns and IrfanView bit versions)
- The program name and icon have some extra text in the 64-bit version for better distinguishing

The support of .wal format in IrfanView is very limited and it was removed in 64 bit version. It can only read .wal files, it cannot save them, and it seems it doesn't support textures with multiple sizes.
Instead of dealing with two versions of IrfanView, I would recommend using a specialized program for working with game files. My system: IrfanView 4.62 64bit, Windows 10 22H2, Intel Core i5-3570, 16GB RAM, NVidia GTX 1050Ti 4GB

The main reason for asking was mainly to use it as intended, a viewer. Wally still works very well as an editor despite being released 20 years ago, but when it actually comes to going through a folder fast Irfanview would have been great. Strange that support would be dropped in the 64 bit version but thanks for clearing it up.
