Default Zoom Level "Fit images to window" when opening

I open a lot of images directly from Windows Explorer. IrfanView is my default image viewer.

When IrfanView opens, I want it to always open "Fit images to window" mode. There's never a time that I want it to open 100% or any other zoom level.

I have several cameras, and each camera has different resolution, so having IrfanView "Fit images to window" by default for me will be a lot of help.

I feel like I've asked this, or a similar, question before, but the fact that IrfanView is still defaulting to 100% leads me to believe I haven't fixed it yet.

Yes, I have gone into the settings, and set what appears to be the obvious settings.

Because IrfanView is my default image viewer, and I open a lot of images one at a time during the day, I have selected the zoom level of "Fit images to window" countless times.

Is there a setting I'm missing?

Also, someone in my first post asked that I include my IrfanView version numbe in my signature. Haven't figured out signatures here in the forum yet, so here's my version:

    IrfanView 64-Bit v4.60 (registered) under Windows 11 (21H2)

    Thanks!
    IrfanView 4.56 - 64-bit (Windows 10 - Latest Build - 64-bit)

For me, if I set the View, Display Option to Fit Images to Window, then IrfanView remembers the setting when I open images from Windows Explorer.

Make sure that you have permissions set to allow the *.ini file to be updated.

I had the same issue today and I also tired the same method Amarand tried and it's not working. Eventually, I just delete the old *.ini file (so the program will go back to the default settings) and re-do all my setting. Luckily, the program had not started in 100% zoom again.

I think I'm having the same issue. I have it set to "Fit to Screen - Large Images Only". When the image is bigger than the screen resolution it brings it down to fill the screen. When it's smaller then it enlarges the image to fill the screen. Basically "Fit to Screen" does work, but on ALL images regardless of size. I have to keep toggling F to activate and deactivate the setting.

I'm assuming this is what you guys mean.

I also got the same problem just recently, never had it before. I was confused because when I went to toolbar Properties/Settings and chose "Fit to screen etc." all images still opened in original size. Then I went to menu titles "View - Display options" and there it still showed "Fit window to image". When I changed also that to "Fit to screen" the problem was solved.

Otherwise, Iview is a great tool, thank you!

IrfanView has a lot of options, so new users often get confused. Even when we tell them exactly which option to change, they continue making the same mistake. We should not need to repeat the answer already given to open the View menu, and set the Display Options on the submenu.

It is a manifestation of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

It's an effect of non-intuitive app design and missing option. If the zoom options are available in the main video, in the center I might add, then there also should be a "Default" view option.
