problems with OCR

I have been importing pictures (jpeg's) for a while now that contain text. I have highlighted areas of the text and gone to options/start OCR, the page has converted to text for me.
Recently I do the same as I have always done but now, every time, I get a box that says
ERROR - CODE
code-import-kenn
and in a box below I get
unknown unicode 0xxxxxxxxxx
I have to keep clicking on this as the numbers change until it completes and then it opens a box that says
ERROR CODE 360
error in character recognition.
It even happens with pages I have previously recognised and used the text from.
Has anyone any idea what I have done to cause this and to stop me being able to use OCR?

add, I have the plugin Kadmos OCR plugin for IrfanView 4.4y installed according to irfanview plugins.

Note: the OCR PlugIn works only with IrfanView 32-bit.
