The forum software automatically transcodes image attachments with the aim to reduce their size. 16-bit PNG is converted to 8-bit and JPEG is converted to quality 90. Given the subject matter of this forum, often the exact data is important to demonstrate a technical issue. Maybe, instead of transcoding, a more strict limit should be imposed on data size to avoid users uploading too much or images with hidden payloads.
